Hoosli’s

Total entertainment! That’s what «Hoosli’s» all about. Because this dynamic group of young men bring a certain magic to every performance…the kind of magic that keeps an audience spellbound ’till the final curtain. And now their skillful blend of song, dance and unique instrumentation has been captured on this album, especially for you.

Undoubtedly, you will notice the versatility of «Hoosli». But there is one thing common to all selections… profound pride in the Ukrainian heritage. For a new awareness of the Ukrainian culture was developed by these young men at St. Vladimir’s College (a minor seminary in Roblin, Manitoba under the direction of the Redemptorist Fathers.) Of course, all members of the group have a Ukrainian background, but under the leadership and direction of Dr. Paul Macenko, one of Canada’s foremost experts on Ukrainian music, new life and understanding was breathed into a forgotten tradition.

Although each member of the group has now gone his separate way since graduation, close ties have been maintained with the past. And it is with great pride that «Hoosli», under the direction of Walter Zulak, present their first album.

An album drawn from our rich Ukrainian choral heritage of folk and religious music. In 1976, the first recording of Hoosli was released. This edition was on an LP, composed of 12 songs. Choir consisted of 24 members. In expanding the activities of the St. Vladimir’s College Alumni Choir, a need was felt to develop a new name… brief, distinct, yet meaningful. And so the name ‘Hoosli’ was chosen. It gave birth to the group’s first album. The name, unfamiliar to many, is that of an ancient instrument similar to a zither. The instrument represents versatility. For it produces not only music, but a feeling as well… the gentle strains of an attitude… the fire of a belief. That’s precisely what the group Hoosli does.
